Abstract
John Searle's speech act theory, as one of the foundational approaches in pragmatic analysis of language, enables the examination of texts beyond the grammatical and semantic levels, uncovering the speaker's hidden intentions and the impact of speech on the audience. The present study aims to analyze assertive speech acts in the epistemological sermons of Imam Ali (AS) based on Searle's speech act theory. Epistemological sermons refer to those delivered with the purpose of raising awareness, enhancing insight, and guiding audiences toward truth. This research employs a descriptive-analytical method, examining samples from the epistemological sermons of Nahj al-Balagha to analyze assertive speech acts as the dominant type of speech acts in these sermons. The findings indicate that Imam Ali (AS), through the extensive use of declarative and descriptive structures, elucidates religious truths, clarifies the nature of opposing movements, portrays the condition of society and true believers, classifies various groups of people, and warns against the consequences of following whims and desires. The direction of fit in these acts is "word-to-world," meaning that the Imam seeks to explain and reveal reality as it truly is for the audience. Furthermore, assertive speech acts in these sermons function beyond mere information transmission and serve as a fundamental tool for intellectual enlightenment, correcting beliefs, and fostering insight among the audience, which aligns perfectly with the epistemological nature of these sermons and the Imam's primary goal of intellectual guidance and social reform.
